Before your kids drive you crazy...
14 June 2010
Those who know me well know how many parenting books I have... it's a stack... actually, to be honest, it's probably a bookcase's worth. I'm not one for following any particular theory or thesis, but I take from each of them a little piece of wisdom. I have to admit, on a personal level, I really like the Politically Incorrect Parenting book from
Nigel Latta. It struck a cord with me, and I was so interested in what he had to say, I actually sat down and read the entire book in one night.
It's this week's book of the week however for a particular reason - it imparted a little piece of wisdom that stuck, and yesterday, I decided to initiate... "You can't get a family in order if everyone lives in a chaotic mess, so cleaning up is an essential step" which is followed up with "You have to look the part if you want to act it"... I like it. And while I haven't finished yet (one level of the house down, two to go), I am already feeling much better for acting upon it.
Here's the book description from the
Harper Collins website:
"Why is it so hard to be the parent you thought you would be?
Do your kids sometimes make you feel your head is going to explode? Ever yelled at them until you were hoarse? Do you have days when you feel like making a run for the airport?
For harassed parents struggling to understand why they end up screaming at their kids and tearing their hair out trying to make them understand that bad behaviour has inevitable consequences, this is the perfect book to help your family make it through the crucial first decade or so and still enjoy each other′s company.
Practical commonsense answers and real life examples, logical and realistic strategies, and innovative behaviour modification tools that work in the real world - all from a parent and family therapist who′s seen almost everything there is to see and offers some hard-won battlefield wisdom. Written in down-to-earth language, this book needs to be handed out at birth, an essential guide for the struggling parent who knows family life can and should be better."
